How to keep your scarf from slipping

A lovely follower asked me how to keep her scarf from slipping. She (like myself) likes the interesting part of her scarf tying to be shifted to the side, but the weight of the tie naturally wants to migrate front and center. She doesn’t want to pierce her silk scarves with pins, or damage them with adhesive (a possibility with some fashion tapes), and hoped I had some answers for her. Guess what? I do! (I also have a catalog of my favorites of the season ready for you to shop at the end of this article.)

There are a few different ways to approach this. Each depends on the weight and bulk of the scarf, as well as the type of knot you are tying.

Use your bra strap as an anchor

You can slip your scarf end through your bra strap at the shoulder before tying your scarf. This will help keep your knot anchored at the shoulder. However, your chosen knot style will have to be big enough to cover your strap, or this will just look tacky.

Pin through your blouse, but not your scarf

Brooches with long pins can be used to hold your scarf without piercing it. To do this, insert the pin into your blouse. Bring the pin end back through as far to the tip as possible without puckering your blouse. Lay your scarf over your blouse fabric between the hinge and the clasp of your brooch. Fasten the clasp without catching your scarf fabric in it. It should be like a sandwich: brooch on top, scarf fabric, blouse fabric, brooch pin (under the fabric), with just the tip end of the pin and the clasp on the side of the sandwich. Your brooch pin has to be large for this to work and you have to make sure that the hinge and clasp don’t snag your scarf.

A new life for bobby pins

Decorative bobby pins can be a great way to hold a delicate scarf in place without snagging it. That might sound strange, but there are some really stylish bobby pins now (you can see my picks in the catalog at the end of this post). Simply tie your scarf and slide a bobby pin over your scarf and under your blouse knot to hold it securely. This method doesn’t work well with collared shirts, but it can be fantastic for other types. You can also use a plain bobby pin in a color that blends with your scarf. Just be sure to tuck it where it’s covered by the knot.

Magnets

Tiny collar magnets are another way to secure your scarf. These can be worn with any type of shirt thin enough for the magnets to stick. All you have to do is tie your scarf as you like it and position the magnets to hold your scarf an your blouse together. !!! WARNING: Magnets are a choking hazard for small children and pets. They are also not suitable for those wearing pacemakers or insulin pumps. !!!
